What you must know about [MRI examination]

In recent years, with the rapid development of medical technology, medical imaging diagnosis has entered a new stage of development, and the application of MRI has become more comprehensive, accurate, safe, and stable.

What does MRI check?

Systemic soft tissue lesions

Regardless of tumors, infections, degenerative lesions from nerves, blood vessels, lymph vessels, muscles, connective tissues, etc., more accurate positioning and qualitative diagnosis can be made.

Chest lesions

Masses, lymph nodes, and pleural lesions in the mediastinum can show the relationship between the masses in the lungs and the larger trachea and blood vessels.

Pelvic organs

Uterine fibroids, other tumors of the uterus, ovarian tumors, qualitative positioning of masses in the pelvis, tumors of the rectum, prostate, and bladder, etc.

Bones and joints

The diagnosis and scope of intraosseous infection, tumor, trauma, especially for some subtle changes such as bone contusion, intraarticular cartilage, ligament, meniscus, synovium, synovial sac, and bone marrow lesions have high diagnostic value.

Precautions for NMR

  • Don’t wear accessories

During the inspection, a strong magnetic field will attract all metal objects, which may cause you to be injured. So remember to remove all jewelry, including the belly button and the accessories on your feet.

  • No makeup

Some cosmetics contain metals, which react with magnetic fields. Therefore, do not makeup on the day of the inspection, including nail polish, antiperspirant, sunscreen, etc. It is best not to use hair care products.

  • Feel anxious

Some people feel fear or anxiety during the examination, similar to the feeling of claustrophobia. So it’s best to close your eyes before entering the machine and don’t open them during the whole process. You might as well imagine something more interesting, or a person or pet you like.

  • Inform your tattoo

During the inspection, the pigments in the tattoo will heat up, causing skin irritation and even burns, and the covering will not work. If skin irritation occurs during the examination, stop immediately.

  • Time is longer than you expected

The standard inspection procedure is only about 15 minutes, but it may be stretched to an hour. So you might as well have something to eat before the check-up, and be sure to go to the bathroom.

  • loud voice

During the inspection, you may hear a lot of noise, like a hammer drill in construction, the volume is as high as 82~118 decibels, so it is best to wear earplugs in advance. Some people, especially young children, maybe frightened, so they need to take sedatives to be tested quietly.

  • May feel hot

Under the action of radio waves, the body surface temperature may rise by about 1 degree Celsius, so some people will feel hot during the inspection. Don’t worry at this time, keep calm.

  • Don’t move

If you move during the inspection, you have to do it again.

  • Don’t worry about radiation

Nuclear magnetic resonance uses a strong magnetic field and radio waves, without X-rays, so there is no need to worry about radiation hazards.
